Meyer Circle Seahorse Fountain Faces Structural Damage: Restoration Efforts Underway

One of Kansas City’s most beloved fountains, the Meyer Circle Seahorse Fountain, suffered significant damage earlier this summer. The upper limestone bowl, already showing signs of wear, split in half and collapsed into the lower basin, highlighting the urgent need for restoration.

While minor deterioration had been visible in parts of the sculpture over the years, this recent break has made the issue unavoidable. The City of Fountains Foundation is now working closely with the KCMO Parks Department to assess the extent of the damage and determine a thoughtful path forward, including the potential repair or full replacement of the fountain’s sculptural elements.

A History of Restoration And What Wasn’t Covered

The last major restoration of the Meyer Circle Seahorse Fountain took place in 2018–2019, when efforts focused primarily on the mechanical and electrical systems, as well as repairs and waterproofing of the large basin and surrounding stone wall. At that time, some emergency repairs to the limestone bowl were made, but the sculptures and bowls themselves were not part of the core project.

Now, those same sculptural features have become the fountain’s most vulnerable components.

Material Legacy and Long-Term Wear

The current limestone bowls and sculptures are more than 33 years old. These were replacements for the original white marble sculptures, which were created in Italy in the 1600s and installed in Kansas City in 1925. While limestone was chosen for its availability and affordability, no stone can withstand the effects of time, weather, and vandalism forever.

This latest break is a visible reminder of how fragile even the grandest monuments can be.

What’s Next

The City of Fountains Foundation and KC Parks are committed to protecting this historic piece of Kansas City’s public art. Next steps may include reconstructing the bowls and sculptures, possibly returning to more durable materials. Design, engineering, and funding discussions are underway.

We know how much this fountain means to the surrounding neighborhoods and to Kansas Citians citywide. This fountain stands as a central feature of the neighborhood and a lasting symbol of Kansas City’s public art legacy.
