The Scout
The City of Fountains Foundation holds an endowment for this sculpture.
The Scout overlooks downtown Kansas City from his perch on top of a hill in Penn Valley Park. It can be seen from nearby Interstate 35. One of Kansas City’s most iconic sculptures, it has become a symbol and mascot for Kansas City.
The Scout was dedicated in 1922 as a memorial to local Native American tribes and it depicts a Sioux scout on horseback. Originally cast for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915, it arrived in Kansas City as a temporary exhibition on its way back to the sculptor on the east coast. Citizens were so delighted by the sculpture that they raised $15,000 for its purchase.
It is located north of the intersection above, north of the tennis courts and skateboard park.
