There’s a timeless magic when Kansas City’s fountains begin to flow again. On Wednesday, April 23rd, we gathered at Mill Creek Park beside the Mill Creek Fountain to welcome the return of the water—and all it symbolizes.
Set against the Country Club Plaza and clear spring skies, this year’s Fountain Day gathered civic leaders, neighbors, and supporters to celebrate a shared tradition that belongs to us all.
Speakers including Mayor Quinton Lucas, Mayor Pro Tem Ryana Parks-Shaw, Councilmember Melissa Patterson Hazley, and Foundation President Mark McHenry reflected on the power of public art and how fountains help define Kansas City’s character. Their remarks captured how these public works serve as enduring expressions of our city’s civic pride, creativity, and sense of belonging.
This year’s ceremony also carried a spirit of resilience. Fountain Fest, originally set for April 19th as a larger celebration of art, music, and community, was canceled out of caution due to potential nearby demonstrations. Still, the day’s spirit endured. We’re already planning a full Fountain Fest for 2026—and we promise it will be something special.
As water returned to Mill Creek Fountain, the crowd’s excitement built—helped along by a live countdown and lively music from the local duo Strawberry Jam.
Fountain Day reminded us why these spaces matter—gathering places, neighborhood landmarks, and quiet storytellers of Kansas City’s spirit.
