Behind each flowing basin and marble sculpture stands a dedicated nonprofit committed to their preservation: The City of Fountains Foundation.
Founded in 1973, the City of Fountains Foundation began at a time when many of Kansas City’s historic fountains were deteriorating. A group of civic leaders, artists, and advocates came together with one goal: to restore and protect the city’s public fountains and sculptures. Their efforts were driven by the belief that public art enriches daily life and nowhere is that more evident than in Kansas City.
Since then, the Foundation has helped restore more than 50 fountains and monuments, secured vital funding, commissioned new works, and inspired community support. Today, Kansas City enjoys global recognition as one of the most fountain-filled cities in the world.
The Meaning Behind the Motion
Kansas City is home to over 200 fountains, making it second only to Rome in number. These installations serve as tributes to veterans, civic milestones, artists, and everyday beauty.
Maintaining that legacy takes more than admiration. It requires a network of skilled engineers, caretakers, and planners to ensure that the pumps run and the stonework is preserved.
