The Vital Work of the Adopt-A-Monument Committee

The Adopt-A-Monument Committee plays a crucial role in preserving Kansas City’s public sculptures and monuments. This dedicated group combines volunteer efforts with professional expertise to maintain and conserve our city’s artistic heritage.

A Look Back: Our Journey Initiated by the Historic Kansas City Foundation with a grant from the National Save Outdoor Sculpture project, over 40 volunteers surveyed more than 200 outdoor sculptures. Their findings laid the groundwork for future conservation efforts.

Key Achievements:

  • Established a partnership with the City of Fountains Foundation in 2001 to maintain endowment funds for sustainable conservation.
  • Conserved eleven monuments and secured endowments for six by 2004.
  • Launched the Festival of Fountains campaign in 2013, raising $3 million for fountain repairs.

Ongoing Programs:

  • Maintenance Training: Annual sessions in spring and fall for organizations and individuals responsible for public monuments.
  • Survey Updates: Monitoring and documenting changes to sculptures and monuments.
  • Fundraising and Conservation: Raising funds for the repair and maintenance of Kansas City’s landmarks.
  • Lobby Efforts: Advocating for the preservation of public sculptures.

Get Involved: Volunteering with the Adopt-A-Monument Committee is a great way to contribute to the preservation of Kansas City’s public art. Your support is vital to our mission.
