Kansas City, famously known as the “City of Fountains,” celebrated the 50th anniversary of Fountain Day in grand style on April 14th, 2023. This annual event marks the official return of the city’s beloved fountains, signaling the arrival of spring and bringing life back to public spaces throughout the city. But this year was extra special—it was not only about welcoming the fountains back, but also celebrating 50 years of the City of Fountains Foundation’s dedication to preserving and promoting these iconic landmarks.
A Look Back at the Event
The celebration kicked off at the stunning Mill Creek Fountain, one of Kansas City’s most cherished water features. The event featured exciting commemorations of the foundation’s half-century of service, including the unveiling of special 50th Anniversary publications and products that showcase the city’s rich fountain history.
Kansas City officials and members of the City of Fountains Foundation took center stage to officially turn the fountains back on, while attendees were treated to a special appearance by Royals mascot, Sluggerrr, who brought plenty of cheer and energy to the afternoon.
Later that evening, the festivities continued at Kauffman Stadium, where the Royals took on the Atlanta Braves. Fountain Day attendees were invited to enjoy a night of baseball as part of the day-long celebration of Kansas City’s unique fountain heritage.
Honoring Those Who Made It Possible
The City of Fountains Foundation would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the generous individuals and organizations that made our 50th Anniversary celebration such a success. From the dedicated support of the Helen S. Boylan Foundation to the enthusiastic partnership with the Kansas City Parks and Recreation, the event was a true collaboration that honored the city’s commitment to its fountains.
Special thanks also go to sponsors like KC Bier, the Mason L. Dean Testamentary Foundation, and the Kansas City Royals, as well as local artists and contributors who helped bring a creative flair to our commemorative items. Their support allows us to continue our mission of preserving Kansas City’s fountain heritage for future generations to enjoy.
