Call for Artists - Fountains Coloring Book

The CITY OF FOUNTAINS FOUNDATION OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI is issuing a Call for Artists to submit designs to be used for a COLORING BOOK. The BOOKS will be created and sold to support the Fountains of Greater Kansas City.

  • The City of Fountains Foundation (COFF) is a not-for-profit foundation, supporting the maintenance, conservation and restoration of fountains and monuments throughout the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area. The Foundation holds trust funds to augment public funding for major repairs and renovations. We provide public information, educational lectures and tours, and training for agencies and organizations about maintenance and cleaning of their sculptures and fountains.
  • The Foundation was founded in 1973 and will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2023. In honor of our anniversary, we are planning to create several products featuring the fountains for which Kansas City is famous.

  • The COLORING BOOK should represent the variety of fountains throughout the Metro, including hidden gems as well as more famous pieces.
  •  Artists may submit designs related to one or more of the fountains of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area.
  • Artists who are residents of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area will be given preference.
  • Designs may include a whole fountain or any detailed part of a fountain.
  • Multiple artists will be selected in order to include a variety of designs and showcase as many of Kansas City’s artists as possible.
  • It is not necessary for the artwork to refer specifically to the COFF nor the anniversary, as it is anticipated to be used for more than one year.
  • QUESTIONS may be directed to the City of Fountains Foundation at or (816) 842-2299.

  1. Submittals shall be line drawings suitable for use in a coloring book. The book will be approximately 8-½” x 11 final size. The artwork shall fit within the margins of ¼” right, top and bottom, and ½” on left. Final artwork size will be 7 ¾” x 10 ½”.
  2. Style is of the Artist’s choice – realistic, abstract, cartoon, etc.
  3. Approximately 10-20 artists will be selected, though the COFF reserves the right to select more or fewer, based on submissions received and the budget available. Artists will be credited in the publication but the Foundation will own selected designs.
  4. The coloring book is intended to be attractive to both adults and older children. Complex designs are welcome.
  5. A stipend of $500.00 (five hundred dollars) will be paid for each selected design. Design chosen for the cover art may be given a higher stipend. Selected designs are to be considered as “works made for hire” as that term is defined in Section 101 and Section 201 of the Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. 101 and 201) and are the sole and exclusive property of the Foundation and/or its assigns and no future compensation to the Artist will be made. Upon selection, a contract to this effect will be executed between COFF and the Artist. Designs not selected will be returned to, and shall remain the property of, the Artist.
  6. Each submission (i.e., each page of the coloring book) should focus on one or more fountains. Please identify which fountain or fountains are featured. Identification can be part of the design, or that information may be included separately.
